How to improve your ACT score quickly

How to improve your ACT score quickly
by Emily Messersmith

29 to 35: I got a 29 on my first practice ACT. When I took the real exam for the first time, I got a 32. From there, I was able to improve my ACT score to 35 with just a few weeks of studying. In those few weeks, I only studied about 1 to 2 hours a day. 1 to 2 hours of focused, strategic studying can get you very far.

For example, the first time I had taken the ACT, I scored a 31 on the math portion. I had studied so hard for that specific area because I always felt I wasn’t as good at math as I was at English. Turns out I had studied the wrong things. It’s crucial that you know exactly what the ACT will ask you, and how they want you to find the answer. Once I figured out what math topics they would ask me and used the correct studying strategies, I used my knowledge to get a 36 on the math portion my second time taking the ACT.

It’s important to understand that the ACT is not inherently hard, rather, you need to know the types of questions they tend to ask and how to tackle them. There are certain patterns that are likely to show up or questions that they have asked in previous years that they have just changed the wording of.

My experience with the math segment was a bit different than my experience with the English portion. The first time around, I had scored a 31 on English. I didn’t really feel the need to study intensely for English, because I thought I’d be fine since, well, I already speak the language. This was not the case, though, and I regretted not having studied hard. I was able to target what I needed to work on and by noticing patterns in the test, and I improved my score to a 35 on my second attempt of the exam. Finding out those little tricks was really the key to being successful and having a smooth testing experience.
